Cerberax Taming Requires Three Tests Ahead of ARK’s September 30 Update

ARK: Survival Ascended’s next major content drop is set for September 30, bringing a new approach to creature taming with Cerberax. The three-headed creature is included for owners of ARK Fantastic Tames Season 1, and Studio Wildcard has now confirmed that gaining its loyalty will not be a one-step encounter. Survivors will need to win over each head individually before the animal can be claimed by a tribe.
The date also carries considerably broader importance than one new tame. September 30 is scheduled to deliver the Therizinosaurus TLC, the Gargantar, and ARK’s move to Unreal Engine 5.8. Players planning fresh breeding projects, creature hunting, or base work should therefore expect the update to affect both their immediate goals and the game’s underlying technology at the same time.
Each Cerberax head has its own requirement
Cerberax’s taming process is built around three distinct personality tests rather than a single universal method. One head responds to direct physical resistance, requiring the survivor to grapple for control. A second is more readily persuaded with food, while the final head is best approached through a hunt. All three conditions must be completed; satisfying two is not enough to secure the creature.
That structure should make preparation matter more than it would for a conventional knockout or passive tame. Survivors will want equipment suitable for close interaction, supplies for the food-focused stage, and a plan for the hunting portion before beginning. Tribes may also find it useful to assign roles, particularly if the hunt or control challenge creates danger in the surrounding area. The announcement does not specify the foods, targets, locations, or exact mechanics involved, so those details remain for the in-game release.
The creature’s three heads had previously been presented as a combat feature, but the new information establishes that their differing temperaments also define its acquisition. The result is a tame that asks players to adapt to several types of interaction in one encounter, with no shortcut based on a simple majority among the heads.
September 30 combines new content with an engine upgrade
Season 1 holders will receive Cerberax on September 30 together with the Gargantar, while the Therizinosaurus is due for its TLC treatment on the same day. The simultaneous Unreal Engine 5.8 upgrade makes this a particularly significant patch window. Players using mods, running unofficial servers, or maintaining elaborate saves should keep an eye on update notes and compatibility information as the release approaches, since engine-level updates can be consequential beyond the headline additions.
Studio Wildcard is also continuing to emphasize cross-platform custom content through the in-game mod browser. The browser is intended to provide access to player-made maps, creatures, items, and modes directly from the game across platforms. The official spotlight for this week included Drip Ascended, Dracoteuthis, Scorched Earth Reborn, Corrupted Costumes, Dragon Triangle, Black Labs Adjustments: Managarmr, and Wake of Fortune. These featured projects are optional community creations, not part of the September 30 official creature and engine package.
ARKpocalypse begins a new monthly cycle
ARKpocalypse servers were wiped on September 19, opening a new monthly-reset season for players who prefer a faster-moving official environment. These servers use elevated rates and a rotating curated mod selection, and can be located by searching for “Arkpocalypse” in the server browser. The next reset is scheduled for October 16, 2026.
For players returning after the wipe, the reset means every tribe starts from the same point in progression and established holdings from the previous cycle are gone. With the next wipe already dated, groups can make more informed decisions about how heavily to invest in long-term construction, breeding lines, and resource stockpiles. It also gives newcomers a clear opportunity to join an official-rate variant without facing the accumulated infrastructure of an older persistent server.
Official-network bonus rates run through September 21
The official network is running a limited bonus-rate period through Monday, September 21. Standard PvP and PvE servers have double Harvesting, Taming, Experience, and Breeding rates. Small Tribes receives 4.5 times Harvesting, Taming, and Experience, plus four times Breeding. ARKpocalypse has the highest listed boost, with five times Harvesting, Taming, Experience, and Breeding.
The timing is especially useful for the newly wiped ARKpocalypse cluster, where accelerated gathering and early tames can establish a foothold before competition intensifies. On persistent official servers, breeders have a shorter window to take advantage of faster maturation-related progress, while resource runs and experience farming also benefit from the temporary multipliers. Players should account for the September 21 end date rather than assume the boosted settings will remain in place through the coming September 30 release.
With a new ARKpocalypse cycle underway and Cerberax’s three-part tame confirmed, the next several days offer two very different priorities: use the current rate event to advance on the official network, then prepare for a larger update that combines creature content, a Therizinosaurus refresh, and the Unreal Engine 5.8 transition.
