ARK: Survival Ascended’s Unreal Engine 5.8 upgrade is moving to October 28, with a Steam Public Test Realm opening on October 5. The revised schedule gives players an opportunity to test the engine update before its wider release and provides a preparation period for the game’s modding community.

The delay does not apply to everything previously scheduled for September 30. In Dollie’s Discord announcement, Cerberax, Gargantar, and the Therizinosaurus TLC remain on track for September 30.

That separates what was previously presented as one major update into two releases: new creatures and the Therizinosaurus refresh first, followed by the engine upgrade in October.

September’s creature update is still going ahead

For players waiting to tame Cerberax, encounter Gargantar, or try the refreshed Therizinosaurus, the announced date has not changed.

Earlier official coverage in Community Crunch 524 placed those additions alongside UE 5.8 on September 30. The new announcement separates the technical upgrade from that content schedule rather than moving the entire update back a month.

The distinction matters: September 30 is still a game-update date, but players should no longer expect it to mark ASA’s full transition to Unreal Engine 5.8.

Steam players get an early test on October 5

The next stage begins October 5, when the UE 5.8 Public Test Realm beta client is scheduled to become available on Steam.

According to Dollie’s announcement, the test is intended to let players try the upgrade and help stress-test it ahead of release. The full engine update is then scheduled to reach all platforms on October 28.

The notice does not provide installation instructions, a download size, or a detailed breakdown of the test environment. It also does not announce a console beta. Players interested in participating should watch for the official access instructions closer to October 5.

Crucially, the beta date is not the date every live server switches to the new engine. It is a separate testing stage before the wider rollout.

Mod preparation begins before the engine launches

For mod authors, October 5 also starts a significant behind-the-scenes transition.

The accompanying Overwolf notice says cooking servers will be taken offline as Studio Wildcard releases the UE 5.8 test client and beta DevKit. Mods will then be recooked in batches for the engine upgrade.

“Cooking” is the process that prepares a mod’s content for use in the game. The planned outage therefore concerns the infrastructure used to build and process mods—it should not be read as an announcement that everyone’s gameplay servers will shut down.

Projects showing significant problems during the transition will be collected into a list so authors can identify where further work is needed. Modding is scheduled to reopen with the October 28 engine launch, when the list of projects requiring author action will also be published.

Overwolf additionally warns that cooking and project moderation could take longer during the first few days after release as demand increases. A mod update may therefore take additional time to move through the system, even after its author has submitted it.

What server owners should prepare for

For communities running heavily modded servers, compatibility is the practical issue to watch.

As a precaution, server owners should keep recent backups of their worlds and configuration files, record their installed mods, and follow compatibility notices from those projects. Where possible, testing an updated setup separately from the main server can help identify problems without putting the community’s only save at risk.

The announcement does not establish a mandatory server wipe or guarantee that every mod will require manual repairs. It describes a batch-rebuild process with additional attention directed toward projects that encounter problems.

For now, the schedule to follow is September 30 for the creature update, October 5 for Steam testing and mod preparation, and October 28 for the full UE 5.8 rollout. The accompanying technical notice cautions that dates may change depending on testing and recooking progress.
