Ark 2 News: The Maeguana Joins Astraeos as a New Creature!
Exciting news for Ark fans—Wildcard has just unveiled the Maeguana, a reptilian cousin to the beloved Maewing, as part of the upcoming Astraeos map. This surprise reveal has sparked a lot of speculation and curiosity. Let’s dive into everything we know so far!
Wildcard Drops a Major Surprise
Astraeos map has been delayed by a day, now set for release on February 13th. While this last-minute postponement suggests final tweaks or bug fixes, the real news is the Maeguana, a brand-new creature making its debut.
The reveal came through a teaser image featuring a familiar silhouette—immediately recognizable as a Maewing variant. Shortly after, the Ark Discord community cracked the mystery, confirming its official name: Maeguana.

What is the Maeguana?
The Maeguana isn’t just a skin or cosmetic change—it’s an entirely new creature, albeit one that shares the Maewing’s model. While we don’t yet know all of its unique abilities, it has been described as a heavy QoL (Quality of Life) tame, likely bringing enhanced breeding support for players.
Will the Maeguana Be Paid Content?
One of the biggest concerns in the Ark 2 community revolves around monetization. Here’s the breakdown:
- The Maeguana is NOT a paid creature.
- It will only spawn on Astraeos, which is a paid map.
- You can still acquire it if a friend who owns Astraeos trades it to you.
This system follows the same pattern as Ark: Survival Evolved’s DLC creatures—players who don’t own Astraeos can still use the Maeguana if they obtain one from someone who does.
Wildcard has made it clear that they want this creature to be widely shared, which is a great move considering the growing concerns over Ark Ascended’s paid content structure.
What Can the Maeguana Do?
From what we can gather, the Maeguana seems to function similarly to the Maewing:
- It has a saddle.
- It carries babies, reinforcing its role as a breeding QoL creature.
- Wildcard even teased a close-up image of its teets, further supporting the idea that it retains the Maewing’s nursing ability.
What Makes the Maeguana Different from the Maewing?
This is the big question—is it just a reskin, or does it bring new abilities? If the Maeguana is identical to the Maewing, it raises the question of why Wildcard wouldn’t just release the Maewing earlier with Genesis Part 2. This suggests that the Maeguana may have some distinct traits or tweaks that differentiate it from its original counterpart.
One challenge players may face is that netguns aren’t available yet, which means trapping the Maeguana might require different strategies.
Astraeos Map: A Surprise New Creature?
Initially, Astraeos was expected to introduce no new creatures, but Wildcard has proven us wrong! The inclusion of the Maeguana adds excitement to the map’s release and raises speculation about what other surprises might be lurking.
With Astraeos set to launch on February 13th, we won’t have to wait long to get our hands on the Maeguana. Whether it’s just a Maewing variant or a more feature-rich breeding companion, its addition is a welcome surprise.
What do you think about the Maeguana? Do you believe it will have new abilities, or will it just be a Maewing reskin? We can only hope and wonder what new creatures will be on the Surprise release of the Lost Colony DLC release.
